Incorporated in 1887, Monrovia is the fourth oldest city in the L.A. Basin. Home to small-town charm and high-tech industry, the city contains over 1700 pre-1930 houses, and its Monrovia Old House Preservation Group is one of the largest nonprofits in Monrovia. Every Friday night from March to Christmas, thousands of residents and visitors mingle at the largest street fair of its kind in the state, with craft and food booths, kiddie rides, a certified farmer's market, live music and more. Myrtle Avenue's shops and restaurants, 12-screen movie palace, small-town ambiance and ample free parking draw shoppers and diners from across the Valley. Library Park is a quiet "town square" at the core of this thriving district. The city encompasses the 1,416-acre Monrovia Canyon Park, a wilderness preserve decreed to remain undeveloped in perpetuity. The town’s “small town America” character makes it a popular film and TV location.
